In 1991, following the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, the Indian Government initially attributed the act to the LTTE. This led to the arrest and confinement of refugees in Vellore Fort. Later, it was determined that the arrested individuals were not involved, and the true perpetrators were apprehended. Despite this, the detained refugees continued to languish in prison, despite numerous appeals for their release. Frustrated and desperate, in 1995, 43 of them, including three women, undertook a daring escape. Tragically, 23 were recaptured, while the remaining managed to flee the country with their families. Some sought refuge in Canada and other parts of the world.
