Fantastic Four Movies In Order and IMDB Scores
The Fantastic Four haven’t always had a good time on the silver screen. Overshadowed by the big players such as Marvel’s Avengers, DC’s Justice League, and even the Guardians of the Galaxy, this unlikely group of superheroes struggled to make their mark on the fantasy genre. Well, all of that is about to change with the reboot of the original story and the showstopping Fantastic Four – First Steps.
But before we take a look at the new film and what it means for fans of the F4, let’s take a look at the previous films in order so you can dive into the world of Mister Fantastic, The Invisible Woman, The Human Torch, and, of course, The Thing.
Fantastic Four – 1994 – IMDb score 3.8
Barely registering on the Fantasy scene and without much action from the pivotal character, The Thing, 1994's offering was quickly forgotten despite starring top names such as Alex Hyde-White, Jay Underwood and Rebecca Staab.
Fantastic Four – 2005 – IMDb score 5.7
The first of the reboots, this movie garnered significantly more attention and critical acclaim than the original, thanks to the clever casting of Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Michael Chiklis, and Chris Evans. With the addition of Thing and a full-on Marvel Universe treatment, this film had a much greater impact.
Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer – 2007 – IMDb score 5.6
The sequel followed quickly, introducing the enigmatic Silver Surfer and the planet-devouring Galactus, putting the world — and quite possibly the entire galaxy — in jeopardy. An interesting concept, unique yet still with that distinctive Marvel touch, made it popular with fans and critics.
Fantastic Four – 2015 – IMDb score 4.3
The fact that the franchise had to undergo yet another reboot in 2015 demonstrates that this unusual superhero concept sits uneasily in the wider Marvel Universe. The 2015 film suffered the same issues as previous incarnations and went widely unnoticed. Starring Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell as the Fantastic Four, it brought a younger, more diverse approach to the story.
This brings us full circle and the latest incarnation of the franchise – Fantastic Four: First Steps.
Official Cast for Fantastic Four 2025
The new cast for the latest incarnation of Fantastic Four includes some highly respected names and a few new faces, too. The F4 main characters are played by Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards (Mister Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm (The Invisible Woman), Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm (The Human Torch) and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm (Thing).
Ralph Ineson takes on the role of Galactus, the planet-destroying nemesis of the F4, while Julia Garner is Shalla-Bal, the mysterious Silver Surfer. Other actors appearing in the film include the unstoppable John Malkovich, Sarah Niles, Natasha Lyonne, and Mark Gatiss.
What We Know About the Plot So Far
The Fantastic Four Universe has dealt with Galactus and the Silver Surfer before, but this time, they've taken it to a new level. The graphics are more dramatic, the CGI sequences are mind-blowingly good, and the story races along at breakneck speed.
However, it’s not just a story about a family trying to defeat evil and save the world – that would be too run-of-the-mill for any superhero story. No, the key to a successful superhero film is that you have to be able to relate to the characters, feel their emotions, and empathise with them in times of trouble.
The family element, touched on in previous incarnations of the F4, is front and centre in this remake. This time, the F4 family has much more at stake and much more to lose. The more in-depth examination of what makes them the characters that they are, complete with all their flaws as well as their strengths, makes this film much more multi-layered than before.
The 'baddies' are not just stock villains, too, which Dr Doom tended to suffer from in previous F4 films. This time, Galactus isn't just an ethereal cloud as he was in earlier incarnations. He's a tangible character of almost godlike stature who just happens to eat planets. There's no malice in the character, just a planet-eating entity who happens to want to snack on planet Earth.
The Silver Surfer has always been a mysterious character - a portent of doom, yet amoral rather than truly evil. This time, the Silver Surfer is even more complex, but the film serves as a reinterpretation of the character from the original comics, which will please true fans of the Fantastic Four.
Where It Fits in the Marvel Cinematic Universe Timeline
The seriously retro vibe of the film hints that the setting is the early 1960s, so well before the Avengers or the latter-day Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. While not confirmed, hints in the trailers and promotional material for the film suggest that the retro look is intentional, and there is one scene where The Thing is seen reading a 1963 copy of Time magazine. There were also hints in Doctor Strange 2 that F4 would be set in the 1960s, so expect cars with big fins and some seriously cool fashion statements throughout.
How VOX Cinemas Will Showcase the New Fantastic Four
We're super-excited about this latest incarnation of the Fantastic Four, so expect matinee performances to ensure everyone can make the most of our showings. The film premieres on July 24th and will be accompanied by Arabic subtitles at all VOX Cinemas across the UAE.
Past Versions vs. New Take: What’s Changed
What's changed? A lot, and not much, to be honest. The storylines are reboots of the original comics, but this time, they've been given a whole new spin with far more in-depth characters that are no longer two-dimensional. The setting is the same, and the threat to the planet will call on all of the skills our superheroes possess. The familiarity of the story will be comforting, but be prepared for some surprises, as well as more action scenes than before.
Why Marvel Fans Are Hyped for This Reboot
Fantastic Four: The First Steps sounds like the reboot we've all been waiting for. This has been a challenging story to get right, as it juxtaposes the effects that their superpowers have on the individual members of the team and how they interact not only with each other but also with those around them. It also puts more emphasis on the ambiguity of ‘good’ and ‘evil’ and explores the Silver Surfer and Galactus in far more depth.
This time, it looks like Marvel has finally got it right and given the Fantastic Four the film they truly deserve.
