Best of Sandra Bullock Movies & IMDb Scores

Pick almost any genre and any decade from the 1990s onwards, and you’ll find Sandra Bullock in the cast list. This versatile actor has gone from science fiction to action thrillers, rom-coms and comedies, demonstrating her acting prowess and range. You could spend hours creating lists focusing just on Sandra Bullock’s action movies or a Sandra Bullock romantic comedies list. But that would limit your appreciation of her full catalogue of work.

To introduce you properly to her work, we’ve put together ten of the essential Sandra Bullock movies to watch if you really want to deep-dive into her career. This is our list of the top 10 Sandra Bullock films of all time, although with so many to choose from, there are bound to be some that we’ve missed!

Gravity 2013 – IMDb score 7.7

With seven Oscars and a Best Actress nomination for Sandra Bullock, this epic sci-fi movie is an intense thriller that, despite the vast emptiness of space, feels terrifyingly claustrophobic. Dr Ryan Stone (played by Bullock) is on her first shuttle mission with veteran Matt Kowalski (George Clooney), who is on his last mission before retiring. After a routine spacewalk becomes anything but routine, both of them have to survive alone in the darkness. Also starring Ed Harris as the voice of Mission Control.

While You Were Sleeping 1995 – IMDb score 6.8

Sandra Bullock is a natural when it comes to comedy, and While You Were Sleeping showcases her comedy talent beautifully. She plays Lucy, a ticket booth operator with a crush on a regular commuter. When she saves him from certain death, it sets in motion a string of events that lead to her being mistaken for the man’s fiancée. But the man’s brother isn’t buying her act, and things start to unravel for Lucy. Starring Sandra Bullock, Bill Pullman, and Peter Gallagher.

The Blind Side 2009 – IMDb score 7.6

The Blind Side saw Sandra Bullock win an Oscar for her role as Leigh Anne Tuohy. Based on a true story, Leigh Anne and her husband Sean take in a homeless African American boy, Michael and support him in his career path to become a professional American football player. Powerful performances by all the characters make this one of the essential Sandra Bullock movies to watch. Also starring Quinton Aaron and Tim McGraw.

Speed – 1994 IMDb score 7.3

If there’s one Sandra Bullock movie that everyone can name, it’s Speed. One of Sandra Bullock’s highest-grossing movies, Speed is a non-stop, adrenaline-pumping rush of a movie with Bullock (quite literally) at the wheel. A bus packed with passengers is fitted with an explosive device that, if the bus drops below a certain speed, will detonate, killing everyone onboard. While Sandra tries to keep the bus at the right speed and prevent it from crashing, cop Jack Traven has to negotiate with the bomber and save everyone on board. A genuinely thrilling ride from start to finish and one of the best Sandra Bullock action movies to date. Also starring Keanu Reeves and Dennis Hopper.

The Proposal 2009 – IMDb score 6.8

The Proposal is the kind of film that showcases Sandra Bullock’s talent for romantic comedy. This slick rom com tells the tale of Margaret Tate, a tough Canadian editor working in New York. After three years, she faces deportation as her visa runs out and hatches a plan with her male assistant to avoid a one-way trip back north. However, a suspicious immigration official sets up a test for the couple and getting it wrong could land both of them in hot water. Also starring Ryan Reynolds, Mary Steenburgen and Craig T. Nelson.

Crash 2004 – IMDb score 7.7

One of the most sophisticated, original, and complex films to come out of Hollywood in years, Crash covers a 36-hour snapshot in LA and how a handful of people’s lives intertwine over that period. Racial tension underlies the storyline, exploring the racial and social divisions of contemporary Los Angeles. Bullock gives a commanding and surprisingly intense performance, and the film was eventually nominated for six Oscars, winning three, including Best Picture in 2006. Also starring Matt Dillon, Don Cheadle, and Thandiwe Newton.

Two Weeks’ Notice 2002 – IMDb score 6.2

We’re back on familiar territory with Two Weeks Notice with this addition to our Sandra Bullock romantic comedies list. She plays Lucy Kelson, a career lawyer who gets hired by suave, womanising George Wade. But when ambitious June Carver comes on the scene determined to catch George’s eye, things get complicated, and Lucy suddenly realises that she’s falling in love with George. Also starring Hugh Grant and Alicia Witt.

Ocean’s Eight 2018 – IMDb score 6.3

This crime caper is a spin-off/sequel to the hugely successful Ocean’s Eleven. This time, it’s an all-female crew that is planning the heist, with Debbie Ocean, younger sister of Danny, gathering together a collection of women who, for various reasons, need a fast ‘cash injection’ to solve some issues. Bold, slick, and glamorous, Ocean’s Eight is one of the best Sandra Bullock action movies and an audience favourite. Also starring Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, and Griffin Dunne.

A Time To Kill 1996 – IMDb score 7.5

With hints of To Kill A Mockingbird, this powerful film looks at the racial tensions in a Mississippi town. A black man, enraged by the fact that two men who attacked his daughter are let off, kills them in front of dozens of witnesses at the courthouse. Now it’s up to his defence lawyer to secure an acquittal and prove that a black man can get a fair trial in a notoriously traditional part of the Deep South. Also starring Samuel L. Jackson, Matthew McConaughey, and Kevin Spacey.

Miss Congeniality 2000 – IMDb score 6.4

The last on our list of the top 10 Sandra Bullock films of all time has to be the fabulous and funny Miss Congeniality. A tough, no-nonsense FBI agent makes a career-ending mistake and has to redeem herself in the eyes of her bosses. She goes undercover at a beauty pageant to flush out ‘The Citizen’. However, Gracie (played by Bullock) is the polar opposite of a typical beauty pageant contestant and has to be coached to be convincing enough to infiltrate the glitzy world of ‘teeth and tiaras’. The coaching unlocks a different side of Gracie, and she starts to embrace her feminine side and catches the eye of one particular man. This is one of Sandra Bullock’s highest-grossing films and a tour de force of rom-com excellence. Also starring Michael Caine, Benjamin Bratt, Candice Bergen, and the magnificently over-the-top William Shatner as Stan Fields.
