The Cat in the Hat Movies Cast & IMDb Scores

In 1957, the children’s fantasy book The Cat in the Hat hit the shelves. Written and illustrated by Dr Seuss (the pen name of Theodor Seuss Geisel), it was an instant success and has remained a perennial favourite ever since. For generations, The Cat in the Hat introduced children to a charmingly sweet and funny world. It was inevitable, then, that Hollywood would greenlight it for blockbuster treatment, and the movie finally hit the screen in 2003.

After 23 years, it was time for a reboot, and one of 2026's most eagerly anticipated releases is the new version of this timeless classic. But what is The Cat in the Hat all about? Let’s take a closer look at the story, cast, and two very different cinematic takes on this delightful tale.

What Is The Cat in the Hat About?

On a cold, wet, rainy afternoon, Sally and her little brother have nothing to do until a mysterious visitor knocks at the door. The Cat in the Hat, with his distinctive red-and-white striped top hat and an ear-to-ear grin, spends the rest of the day entertaining the children with tricks that get more and more out of hand. Despite dire warnings from the children’s pet fish (run with it…), chaos ensues, especially when two new characters, Thing One and Thing Two, show up. The race is on to restore some order before Sally’s mother gets home.

This charming, highly relatable story and its distinctive illustrations made The Cat in the Hat a big hit with young children and their parents. With its simple vocabulary, rhythmic language and distinctive illustrations, The Cat in the Hat became a landmark in children’s literature. Published as the first title in the Beginner Books series, it helped establish a new approach to books for beginning readers. Still in print today, The Cat in the Hat has sold millions of copies worldwide and has been translated into several languages.

The Cat in the Hat (2003) Cast: Who Stars in the Movie?

In 2003, the ‘film of the book’ was released, with comedy genius Mike Myers in the role of the Cat. Famous for playing larger-than-life characters (such as Shrek, Austin Powers, and the ubiquitous Wayne Campbell in Wayne’s World), Myers was the natural choice to play the mischievous and over-the-top Cat. His ability to mimic, ad-lib, and throw himself into the role brought the original Cat to life on screen.

Dakota Fanning plays Sally and Spencer Breslin plays Conrad. Kelly Preston plays Joan, the mother, while Alec Baldwin plays their neighbour, Quinn. Danielle C. Ryan and Brittany Oaks play Thing One and Thing Two, respectively, while babysitter Mrs Kwan is ably characterised by Amy Hill. The ensemble works well, and the breakneck pacing keeps everyone on their toes.

Who Voices The Cat in the Hat in the Animated Movie?

The 2003 film isn’t the only incarnation of the story. A new animated version arrives in 2026, with Bill Hader voicing the Cat. Matt Berry plays Waffles, the pet fish we mentioned earlier who is, surprisingly, the voice of reason in this tale. Quinta Brunson plays Sherri, Xochitl Gomez plays Gabby, Giancarlo Esposito plays Mr. Hoogeboom, America Ferrera plays Carmen, and Tiago Martinez plays Sebastian.

The Cat in the Hat IMDb Rating and Reviews

The 2003 film currently holds an IMDb rating of 4.2/10. Although Mike Myers’s performance brought plenty of energy to the role, the film received a mixed response from critics. Still, audiences enjoyed it, and the target demographic of young children certainly enjoyed the madcap adventures and copious amounts of coloured slime.

The new animated movie has a very different storyline from the original, so it remains to be seen whether it can surpass the 2003 film and become a critical success rather than just an audience favourite.

The Cat in the Hat Movie Release Date and Runtime

The 2026 The Cat in the Hat movie is set for release in November 2026 and has an official runtime of 91 minutes - it’s the perfect length for an afternoon matinee or evening show.

The Cat in the Hat (2003) vs The Cat in the Hat (2026): What’s the Difference?

Beyond the obvious difference between live action and animation, the biggest variations between the two films centre on the story. In the 2003 film, the Cat unexpectedly shows up at Sally and Conrad’s home, turning a rainy, boring afternoon into a sequence of madcap, utterly silly adventures.

In the new film, the Cat works for the Institute for the Institution of Imagination and Inspiration. His boss orders him to cheer up two siblings, Gabby and Sebastian, who are struggling to fit in after moving to a new town.

The principles are the same (a clownish, magical Cat cheers up unhappy children), but the settings and context differ.

The Cat in the Hat Movie Soundtrack and Songs

David Newman composed the instrumental score for The Cat in the Hat (2003), and a companion recording featuring 16 tracks was released at the same time as the film. Three tunes stand out as memorable – ‘Getting Better’ by Smash Mouth, ‘Fun, Fun, Fun’ by Mike Myers, and the orchestral arrangement of the film’s instrumental theme, ‘The Cat’.

Is The Cat in the Hat Suitable for Kids?

The Cat in the Hat is a great kids’ movie. Fun, colourful, and fast-paced, it appeals to kids with its naughtiness, humour, and general mayhem. The underlying themes focus on imagination and creativity, with juxtapositions between fun and responsibility (the chaos the Cat causes must be rectified before the mother returns home) and the consequences of your actions. Despite the story's apparent frivolity, it also carries a serious message.
