Top 10 Angelina Jolie Movies of All Time

From ‘boosting’ cars to casting spells, raiding tombs or diving into the dark depths of mental health, Angelina Jolie is Hollywood royalty. Famous for her marriage to Brad Pitt, her love of children, and her untiring humanitarian work, Jolie is a well-rounded actress with plenty of range, too. Her position as an A-lister is second to her role as a UNICEF ambassador, but to her fans, she is one of the most versatile actors of her generation. The best Angelina Jolie films always draw huge crowds to the cinema.

Angelina Jolie has proven time and again that she is more than just another pretty Hollywood actor, delivering powerful performances that demonstrate her ability to truly inhabit a role and make it her own. Her skills have resulted in an entire cabinet full of awards, including an Academy Award for her role in Girl, Interrupted, three Golden Globe Awards (George Wallace, Gia and Girl, Interrupted), two Screen Actors Guild Awards (Gia, Girl, Interrupted), and a Tony Award nomination (as producer of The Normal Heart), as well as nominations for two BAFTA Awards, two Primetime Emmy Award nominations (George Wallace, Gia) and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her humanitarian work.

Let's take a closer look at her work, which includes a list of Angelina Jolie's blockbuster movies and their IMDb scores, as well as some more refined pieces.

Changeling – 2008 - 7.7

Nominated for a host of awards, including three Oscars, Changeling is a powerful film with hidden messages. After her son goes missing, a mother reaches out to the LAPD to help, but they try to pass an imposter as her son to subdue public protests. Directed by Clint Eastwood, Changeling is a surprisingly chilling thriller and one of the best Angelina Jolie movies to date. It also stars John Malkovich and Jeffrey Donovan.

Girl, Interrupted – 1999 – 7.3

If you’re looking for one of Angelina Jolie’s Oscar movies, you can’t go wrong with this psychological thriller that earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Girl, Interrupted tells the story of a confused teenager (played by Winona Ryder) who is interned in Claymore mental institution after a suicide attempt. Here, she meets a group of deeply troubled women who change her life. Jolie plays Lisa, and the film also stars Clea DuVall, Brittany Murphy, Vanessa Redgrave, and Jared Leto.

A Mighty Heart – 2007 – 6.6

Angelina Jolie thriller films seem to focus on her character desperately trying to find a loved one. In A Mighty Heart, she's off again, this time trying to find her missing husband, who has disappeared in Pakistan. Due to meet with a fundamentalist cleric, questions are immediately asked as to why he's been taken, and by whom. Throughout, Marianne, played by Angelina Jolie, remains steadfast in her determination to uncover the truth and bring her husband home safely. Nail-biting tension makes this one of the best Angelina Jolie movies, and it's well worth watching.

Mr & Mrs Smith – 2005 – 6.5

It's the movie that threw Jolie and Brad Pitt together as Hollywood's most famous couple. Mr & Mrs Smith is a romping action comedy, where a husband and wife team suddenly realise that their idyllic lifestyle hides some huge secrets. Both are, in fact, high-level assassins, and their next targets are… each other. Explosive action scenes and some wonderfully humorous asides make this one of the most entertaining Angelina Jolie action movies on our list. Mr & Mrs Smith also stars Vince Vaughn, Adam Brody, and Kerry Washington.

Maleficent – 2014 – 6.9

This fairy tale took Angelina Jolie’s filmography in a completely different direction, entering a magical world that transforms Maleficent from an idyllic childhood to a vengeful witch. This isn’t just an average fantasy story, though, as it also examines the concepts of betrayal and realisation, making it far more complex than it first appears. Directed by Robert Stromberg, it also stars Elle Fanning and Sharlto Copley.

Salt – 2010 – 6.5

Another example of how Jolie can slide effortlessly into a full-on action movie and make it both convincing and engaging, Salt is the story of a CIA agent wrongly accused of being an assassin whose mission is to kill the President of Russia. Salt's attempt to clear her name before her handlers neutralise her is a desperate race against time and forces lined against her in a battle of wits. This Angelina Jolie blockbuster also stars Liev Schreiber as Ted Winter, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Peabody, and Daniel Olbrychski as Orlov.

Gone in Sixty Seconds – 2000 – 6.5

One of the iconic movies of the early 21st century, Gone in Sixty Seconds is a petrolhead’s dream. Charged with ‘boosting’ fifty cars in three days to save the life of his younger brother Kip, Memphis Raines (played by Nicolas Cage) has to call on the services of a group of friends to achieve the impossible. Christopher Eccleston does a convincing job as bad guy Raymond Calitri, while Angelina Jolie stars as Sway, Raines’ ex-lover and fellow car booster. This is a non-stop action film with some outstanding moments and an underlying message about the importance of family.

The Bone Collector – 1999 – 6.7

When a quadriplegic cop waiting to die is asked to help solve a particularly gruesome series of murders, he forms an unlikely partnership with Amelia Donaghy (played by Jolie) to stop the killer before he slaughters more innocent victims. A complex psychological thriller very similar in feel and context to Seven, The Bone Collector achieved critical acclaim but wasn't a massive hit in movie theatres. However, this slow boiler leads to a thrilling climax, and is well worth checking out. Starring Denzel Washington, Queen Latifah, Michael McGlone, and Michael Rooker.

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – 2001 – 5.8

Despite a solid body of work already on her resumé, it was this classic action-adventure flick that catapulted Jolie to international fame. Taken from the original game, Tomb Raider sees the wealthy Lara Croft setting out on an adventure to retrieve the two halves of an ancient and potentially highly dangerous artefact before it falls into the wrong hands. Along the way, Croft has to overcome some pretty dangerous situations and deal with some treacherous faces from her past, too. Of all the Angelina Jolie action movies, this one definitely deserves its place in the list of the best Angelina Jolie movies of all time.
