Everything We Learnt At Dc FanDome 2021
Following the success of DC FanDome 2020, DC Comics are back again with the worldwide streaming event DC FanDome 2021, a global online convention for all things DC Comics. Similar to last year, the event covered a wide range of topics including movies, shows, comics and video games with an impressive lineup of stars including Robert Pattinson, Jason Momoa, Dwayne Johnson, Ezra Miller, Pierce Brosnan, Zoë Kravitz, Zachary Levi and more.
In this VOX Voice, we’re recapping the biggest announcements and highlighting the key reveals from the event. Let’s get started:
BLACK ADAM
Release Date: 28 July 2022
DC FanDome kicked off with Dwayne Johnson as he showed fans a behind-the-scenes look at his upcoming live-action debut in Black Adam. Johnson plays the antihero Teth-Adam a.k.a. Black Adam and stars alongside Noah Centineo and Pierce Brosnan, who play Justice Society of America members Atom Smasher and Doctor Fate respectively. Before the panel ended however, an electrifying sneak peek at Black Adam’s first appearance in the film was shown. One thing’s for sure, Black Adam will rock audiences to their bones.
DC LEAGUE OF SUPER-PETS
Release Date: 19 May 2022
If you thought Black Adam was all Dwayne Johnson had in store for you, think again. Johnson will also be voicing Superman’s dog Krypto the Superdog in the upcoming animated film DC’s League of Super-Pets. DC FanDome debuted a hilarious first look at the film, which also featured Kevin Hart as the voice of Batman’s dog, Ace the Bat-Hound. The voice cast also includes John Krasinski, Vanessa Bayer, Diego Luna, Natasha Lyonne, Kate McKinnon and the one and only Keanu Reeves.
THE FLASH
Release Date: 3 November 2022
Despite being a little over a year away from releasing, DC FanDome did not hold back in the first official look at The Flash. In less than two minutes, the clip set the tone for what’s to come:
Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen, geared-up with an all-new suit, is shown going through Flashpoint-esque sequences while a familiar voice narrates over him – a voice that’s none other than Michael Keaton’s Batman. The clip additionally showed an alternate version of Barrywearing a makeshift costume that has been seemingly made using Keaton’s iconic Batman suit, along with a first look at Sasha Calle as Supergirl.
Keaton, who only makes a brief, silhouetted on-screen appearance in the clip, dons the iconic cowl for the first time in over 25 years. In a recent interview, Keaton revealed that his original suit still fits and returning as the Caped Crusader was like ‘muscle memory’ to him. But Keaton isn’t the only icon returning as Batman. In August 2020 director Andy Muschietti confirmed that Ben Affleck would also be reprising his role as Batman in the film. According to Muschietti:
“He’s a very substantial part of the emotional impact of the movie. The interaction and relationship between Barry and Affleck’s Wayne will bring an emotional level that we haven’t seen before. It’s Barry’s movie, it’s Barry’s story, but their characters are more related than we think. They both lost their mothers to murder, and that’s one of the emotional vessels of the movie. That’s where the Affleck Batman kicks in.”
AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM
Release Date: 15 December 2022
While Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has only recently begun production, there was enough available for Jason Momoa to share a deep dive into the upcoming sequel. In the first behind-the-scenes look at the film, Yahya Abdul-Matten II’s Black Manta is shown back for revenge with a fresh new look along with concept art for some curious creatures including apparent giant grasshoppers and undersea worms.
Director James Wan also revealed that the film will have a more mature tone and has previously stated that it will feature more of the horror elements fans have come to expect from a James Wan film. Prior to directing the first Aquaman, Wan was known for creating The Conjuring universe as well as co-creating the Saw and Insidious franchises.
SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS
Release Date: 1 June 2023
We’re going to have to wait a little longer for this one. SHAZAM! Fury of the Gods isn’t hitting the big screen until 2023. That didn’t mean fans left empty handed though. SHAZAM! stars Asher Angel and Zachary Levi gave viewers a quick behind-the-scenes look at the upcoming sequel, along with a sneak peek at the film’s antagonists – Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu – who play Hespera and Kalypso, the daughters of the Titan Atlas.
THE BATMAN
Release Date: 3 March 2022
Following the first trailer’s surprising debut at DC FanDome 2020, director Matt Reeves returned this year, alongside Robert Pattinson and Zoë Kravitz, to unveil the new trailer for what might be the most anticipated film of 2022 – The Batman. Fans got their long-awaited and up-close look at Pattinson’s Batman along with new footage showing Kravitz’s Catwoman, Paul Dano’s Riddler, Jeffrey Wright’s James Gordon, Andy Serkis’ Alfred Pennyworth, and an unrecognizable Colin Farrell as Penguin.
The trailer, which featured a haunting rendition of Nirvana’s Something in the Way, showcased a vengeful, brutal, and bulletproof Batman as he goes up against Riddler and Penguin in a crime-plagued Gotham City to solve a conspiracy which seemingly involves himself and his late father, Thomas Wayne. Aside from the already brilliant cast, the trailer also highlighted the film’s stunning imagery, which comes from Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Greig Fraser. Fraser most recently worked on Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, which has been lauded by critics for its breathtaking cinematography.
Luckily, fans won’t have to wait long to experience The Batman on the big screen. It arrives at our cinemas on 3 March, 2022.
From the jaw-dropping new trailer for Matt Reeves’ The Batman to the exciting new looks at Black Adam and The Flash, we can’t wait to experience all these upcoming films and more on the big screen at VOX Cinemas soon.
