Attention Witches, Wizards, and Muggles, Harry Potter week is upon us. One of the very first things you do on your first day at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is get sorted into houses by the Sorting Hat. The houses are Hufflepuff, Slytherin, Gryffindor, and Ravenclaw. We want to banish your worries about coming face to face with the Sorting Hat and prepared a quiz to help you find out which house you could belong to:
Each house has its own unique characteristics and values, along with a day of pride.
Hufflepuff values hard work, patience, justice, and loyalty. Their house mascot is the badger. Hufflepuff Pride Day is on 20 March.
Slytherin values ambition, cunning, leadership, and resourcefulness. Their house mascot is the serpent. Slytherin Pride Day is on 21 March.
Gryffindor values courage, bravery, nerve, and chivalry. Their house mascot is the lion. Gryffindor Pride Day is on 22 March.
Ravenclaw values intelligence, creativity, learning, and wit. Their house mascot is the eagle. Ravenclaw Pride Day is on 23 March.
In honor of Hogwarts week, we’re looking at some of the incredible witches and wizards who belong to each house.
*Harry Potter spoilers ahead*
Hufflepuff – Newt Scamander
Newt Scamander can be described as the physical embodiment of Hufflepuff. He’s a soft spoken magizoologist with a passion for magical creatures. He was often viewed as awkward, uncompromising and eccentric.
Albus Dumbledore believed that Newt was “morally bound to always do the right thing, without any regard for safety, personal gain or even his own wellbeing”. Although he encountered the Dark Wizard Gellert Grindelwald on more than one occasion, he was never swayed to join him. Newt openly expressed his disgust towards the idea of wizard supremacy and would not discriminate against people based on their heritage or beliefs.
He often avoided any form of conflict or rivalry. However, Newt did play a significant part in the hunt for Grindelwald.
Slytherin – Severus Snape
A controversial figure in the Wizarding World, Professor Severus Snape was often viewed as cold, cynical, and sarcastic. After suffering abuse and ridicule as a child at the hands of James Potter, Harry Potter’s father, Snape grew to loathe Gryffindor students.
Despite his complicated history, Snape remained one of the bravest wizards in Hogwarts’ history. He served Lord Voldemort as a Death Eater while secretly reporting back to Dumbledore as a double agent against the Dark Lord. He was extremely resourceful and had strong loyalty and trust towards Dumbledore. So much so, that upon Dumbledore’s request, Snape killed him to protect Draco Malfoy and the students of Hogwarts from Death Eaters.
The majority of Snape’s adult life was spent protecting Harry Potter, the son of the woman he loved and his childhood bully, James Potter.
Gryffindor – Hermione Granger
Undoubtedly the most popular name on this list, Hermione Granger is one of the most intelligent and skillful witches. Although she was born to Muggle parents, Hermione had more knowledge of the Wizarding World than the majority of her pure-blood and half-blood classmates.
Extremely hardworking, Hermione was always at the top of her class. Due to her intelligence, the Sorting Hat considered sorting her into Ravenclaw, but eventually settled on Gryffindor. Despite her vast knowledge of magic, however, she often relied on logic rather than solely using spells like most witches and wizards. She was responsible, a strict perfectionist, and the voice of reason amongst her friends.
Hermione held an extremely pivotal role in the defeat of Lord Voldemort during the Second Wizarding War. She destroyed Horcruxes, fought Death Eaters, and saved countless lives at Hogwarts.
Ravenclaw – Luna Lovegood
Luna Lovegood was always mocked by her classmates due to her odd personality and strange behaviour. At the age of nine, she witnessed her mother’s death in a freak accident which resulted in her distant and dreamy demeanour.
Having been sorted into Ravenclaw, Luna was an intelligent student and exceptionally observant, often noticing when things were out of the ordinary before anyone else. Always levelheaded, she was never seen as anxious or stressed, even when held as a prisoner. She demonstrated true bravely in the Battle of Hogwarts and always stood up for the few friends she had.
In her free time, Luna would be seen painting or enjoying her artistic pursuits. She was a complete nonconformist who lacked self-consciousness.
